Jackson County United Way, has been awarded a matching grant from Indiana Association of United Ways in the amount of $95,000. The 2010 campaign will offer opportunities for individuals and companies to participate by donating new or increased pledges in support of the match. The increase in campaign contributions will be included in agency allocation distribution for the 2011 funding year, while the $95,000 in grant dollars will be allocated to the following programs:

The 1010 Grant Fund will be used for the following programs:

$40,000 Jackson County Successful Schools
  • This initiative was begun support from the 4c2 grants. For the first time in my tenure all four school systems in the county came together to develop a program to prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn. 13 Kindergarten Power standards were developed and are being used in local day care facilities and shared throughout the county at school enrollments, doctor offices, and other local areas. A video has been produced that is also available at county libraries and schools. This grant will allow the initiative to add summer classrooms and Preschool program in Medora (one of the smallest school systems in the state located in a very rural, poor township) There is no preschool program in the system township. The current preschools (2) in Seymour will be continued as well.

$15,000 VITA continuation and Bank On initiation
  • Following a very successful first year of VITA filing in 2010, the JCUW will use $15,000 for materials, advertising , and volunteer support to continue and expand the program for 1 and possibly 2 years. The Bank On initiative will be developed and launched as well as Money Smart Week activities will be planned.

$ 5,000 Upgrade office equipment
  • Current office computers and printers are more than 5 years old and ready for updating.

$35,000 Develop Healthy Lifestyle initiative for Jackson County
  • This will enable JCUW to engage new partners in work to improve the health and well being of the residents of Jackson County. Potential partners include but are not limited to: Schneck Medical Center, Jackson County Health Department, SIHO, Seymour & Brownstown Chamber of Commerce; Seymour Parks Department; JCUW Partner Agencies; and others interested in developing programs and opportunities that may include reducing obesity; offering recreational and healthy living programs and activities such as weight management; community walking trails, 5-k events; disease management programs and other activities.
