Mental Health America of Jackson County works to educate the public about mental illnesses and assist those individuals and families who are affected by a mental illness. MHAJC sponsors the Christmas Gift Lift each year, which provides Christmas gifts to the mentally handicapped during the holiday season. The Social Club meets every other month and allows the clients to meet with their peers and develop social skills in a public setting. These bi-monthly activities include craft night, picnics, bowling, pizza parties, dances, and bingo or game nights. Educating the public about mental illnesses is done through health fairs, newspaper articles, classes taught at Head Start classrooms as well as Child Care Network Preschool classes. These classes focus on building self esteem in young children and helping develop good character traits. MHAJC provides support group meetings on suicide and has recently presented a suicide prevention workshop for our local high school and our plans are to do the same for the other county high schools this academic year. This year we have provided Depression brochures for local medical offices and Post Traumatic Stress and Reuniting with your Family brochures for the military servicemen and women returning from their tours of duty. MHAJC also partnered with a group from the Jackson County Leadership Academy to prepare a brochure for those suffering from the stress of our tough economic times. Our agency provides assistance for counseling appointments and helps individuals purchase medication through their Family Support Scholarship. MHAJC is one of the 60 local chapters in the state that is affiliated with both the state and national associations. Please check out our new website we are so proud of for information on mental illnesses
