Each year, United Way volunteers and staff members put on their campaign hats and venture out to raise money for the Jackson County programming. Most of us attend meetings at our places of business, and many of us generously open our hearts and wallets and fill out a pledge form. We do this with confidence, knowing that our money will go toward a “good cause.” We know United Way does “good things” for the community. But how much do we really know about the organization and about how our donations are being spent?
United Way donations changed lives in Jackson County through new programming that included Jumpstart Kindergarten in Brownstown, Crothersville and Medora; suicide prevention education for Jackson County high school teachers; children prepared to enter kindergarten ready to learn; food distributed to more than 1,000 families some of whom had never needed assistance before; and your donation did this! Best of all, you did not even know you were helping so many!
Jackson County United Way (JCUW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in Jackson County by addressing critical human needs. The organization is unique in that we collaborate with 20 partner agencies to affect positive changes in Jackson County as efficiently as possible. When non-profit organizations work together, not only can more good be accomplished, but also the cost of fundraising is dramatically reduced, leaving more money for what is important—helping people. In fact, 85 cents out of every dollar donated to United Way goes to help people.
Volunteers from around the county visit United Way’s partner agencies to evaluate their effectiveness and make funding recommendations to the United Way board of directors. In the 2009-2010 campaign, United Way distributed $724,496 to agencies with programs that work to improve lives in Jackson County.
Your United Way gift is more than a charitable donation; it is all of us, working together to help not only families in need, but to improve the quality of life for our entire community. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all.
