During 2007, conversations happened about important community needs where grant dollars could make a difference. Early childhood education skyrocketed to the top of the list and grant dollars were focused to improve this community condition. The Jackson County Successful Schools Initiative was born. Partners include all four Jackson County school systems (Brownstown, Crothersville, Medora, and Seymour), Read Jackson County, Child Care Network, and Healthy Families. Programs developed or expanded out of this initiative include: Family Preschool, Jump Start Kindergarten, and 13 Kindergarten Power Standards.

Countywide Early Childhood Education Programs

Kindergarten Power Standards

The Kindergarten Power Standards were developed by Kindergarten teachers from l each of the county’s four school systems. The Kindergarten teachers agreed that the 13 “standards” should be met by each student before entering kindergarten. To print the 13 standards choose your language below.

Get Ready! Video

The Get Ready! Video was developed as a tool to teach the Power Standards to parents and kids. For a copy of the video (ideal settings: a waiting room, Kindergarten registration, community events, etc.) call Child Care Network for arrangements (524-2585).

Family Preschool

Family Preschool a quality, public, early childhood education program located within two Seymour Community School buildings (Brown and Jackson Elementary). Parents interested in preparing their children for kindergarten success are encouraged to register their child. Family Preschool hosts quarterly family activity sessions to promote a positive teacher-parent relationship. Family members are also encouraged to volunteer in the classroom. Child Care Network has operated the Family Preschool program since 2005.

Jump Start Kindergarten

Brownstown, Crothersville, and Medora each host a Jump Start Kindergarten program in the summer before school starts. One teacher offered this comment about the Jump Start Kindergarten program, “the students who attended Jump Start were more prepared for the start of school than those who did not attend. These students were already comfortable with the class routines and with separating from their parents. We felt that we did not have to spend nearly as much time working on the basics like names, singing the ABC’s, shapes, colors, and holding pencils, crayons and scissors correctly, etc. when regular classes began. If you can secure the funding for a Jump Start program again next year, we would be thrilled.”
