Multi-Cultural Council of Jackson County Celebrates Mothers

The Latino Council of Jackson County was developed in 2011 to join local community service agencies and organizations to address unique concerns of Spanish-speaking residents while recognizing and promoting their role as members and participants of the whole community.  This year, the council changed their name to encourage more cultures to come together for the fifth Mother’s Day Celebration and has even more participating organizations collaborating.

The event is focused on “bringing Jackson County cultures together,” shared Tonja Couch, Jackson County United Way Executive Director.  “The event is to provide an experience of being open to other cultures and diversity.” Members of the Seymour High School Band will perform, as well as, folkloric dancers.

Ana DeGante, Seymour Community Schools Director of English Learners Services, added, “This event is for the total community.  We want to celebrate all mothers in Jackson County.  We also want to share our culture through dancing, music, and poems.”

Connecting Latinos to community resources they may not be familiar with is just one of the focuses of the event.  A few examples are staffing agencies helping to find jobs and what documentation is needed to secure a job; social service organizations can share more about afterschool programming and more.  “Ana has been integral in ensuring there will be translators and entertainment for this event,” shared Couch. There will be twenty student volunteers available to help with translation.  DeGante added, “We want the Latino community to feel integrated into the greater Seymour community.  We also want the Anglo community to know more about the culture and Latin traditions. Our goal is to incorporate not only the culture, but to make this an event where everyone can enjoy an early evening out and learn about diversity in Seymour.”
