Helping Connecting to Healthcare Coverage Now Available Locally

“Getting healthcare coverage and access to healthcare services is a big concern for residents of Jackson County” stated Executive Director, Tonja Couch when announcing that Jackson County United Way (JCUW) has become the lead agency for the local Covering Kids & Families coalition.

Since 1999, Covering Kids & Families of Indiana (CKF-IN) has been advocating healthcare coverage for all Hoosiers.  Susan Jo Thomas, CKF-IN Executive Director knows the difference local coalitions make.  “Last year, CKF-IN coalitions expanded to 19 coalitions, a 36% increase. We promote and facilitate healthcare coverage by building local coalitions that enroll, educate and support Hoosiers.  Coalitions help children, families and individuals sign up for, and understand, the healthcare coverage that is available to them through state and federal programs.  I feel strongly that local organizations can do the best job helping their communities.”

Last fall, when the JCUW Board learned Jackson County’s uninsured rate was above the state average and reflected on the community conversations findings regarding the need to provide supportive services to people that are working, but struggling to make ends meet the timing to become a lead agency with CKF-IN made sense.  “The opportunity to become a coalition to increase access to health coverage is meeting an unmet need and creating stronger partnerships,” Couch said.  She added, “We are excited to add a local Covering Kids & Families coalition to our other programs that serve Jackson County residents.  Access to health care and the means to pay for it affects the financial stability of individuals and families by reducing health related debt, increasing workplace productivity, and enabling them to spend more in our local economy.”

With the support of CKF-IN we are excited to add to our staff, Stephanie Strothmann, Community Impact Director.  “Stephanie has a deep desire to serve the community and build strong partnerships to ensure that those who need health coverage have access to it,” shared Couch.  “Stephanie’s experience at Columbus Regional Foundation and the American Cancer Society has provided her with a great foundation to lead this coalition and build strategic alliances to ensure every resident that wants health coverage, gains access to it.”
JCUW is currently hiring a bi-lingual Outreach and Enrollment Specialist, too.
