Who is ALICE?
ALICE is an acronym that stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. It refers to households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) but cannot afford the basic cost of living in Jackson County. Despite struggling to make ends meet, ALICE households often do not qualify for public assistance. Having a low income is often associated with lower levels of education, higher rates of unemployment, and poorer health. While conditions have improved for some households, many continue to struggle, especially as wages fail to keep pace with the rising cost of household essentials (housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and a basic smartphone plan). 37% of Jackson County households are in poverty or considered ALICE.
